Somebandsmerelyadoptthedark;TheHorrorswereborninit.Asenseofthenocturnalhasfollowedthemrightfromthemomenttheyarrived,gothicinbothsoundandlook,with2008’s‘StrangeHouse’.Eversince,twilightatmosphericshavebeentheirchiefcallingcard,fromthesearingpost-punknihilismof‘PrimaryColours’throughtotheirlastfull-length,‘V’,whichwasglitteringbutgauzy.Allofwhichistosaythat,despiteafairlyradicallineupreshuffleforthefirsttimeintheirhistory,thetitleofthissixthLPsuggestsbusinessasusualfortheband.
Intruth,itisanditisn’t;theexperimentsinshimmeringsynthpopthatdefined‘V’and,toalesserextent,2014’s‘Luminous’havebeenshelvedforthetimebeing,with‘NightLife’emergingasTheHorrors’murkiestand,inplaces,mostaggressivealbumsincethefirsttwo.Whentheydelveintothegloomthistimearound,though,theydosowithathrillingnewemphasisonindustrialsoundandstructure;‘DownwardSpiral’-eraNineInchNailsloomsheavyovertheincendiary‘TrialbyFire’,whiletheLP’selectronicod
